An exquisite Art Deco period brooch by the esteemed designer Theodor Fahrner. Active during the early to mid 20th century, TF's MO was to realise artistic integrity in mass- or industrially-produced costume jewellery; essentially raising the bar for producers of affordable jewellery. Fahrner took over his father's jewellery business in 1883, and expanded production beyond rings to include brooches, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings (interestingly, his father's business focused on producing rings to commemorate specific historical events... quite the niche). Theo pioneered the concept of "designer jewellery" inviting artists from many disciplines to contribute pieces and ranges that would go on to be produced, at least in part, by machines. Fahrner achieved international repute when one of his designers, Max J. Gradl, was awarded silver medal at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition, and from then through to the 1950s his brand was hugely popular around the world. This brooch, an example of his 1930s filigree work, is one of the rarer examples. Production was adversely affected during the '30s, first by German politics, and later, obviously, the war, so these late/post Deco pieces are few and far between. This one dates from circa 1935, crafted in silver and set with marcasite and a large central amazonite. STONES Amazonite & Marcasite MEASUREMENTS 4.3 x 3.4cm WEIGHT 11.8g MARKS ORIGINAL FAHRER
