The Art Deco movement "cast aside the dictates of the past" says deceptive arts historian Melissa Gabardi, moving away from the norm of jewellery design at the time. Art Deco jewels were sleek and bold, characterised by sharp edges and regularity of surface, line and volume. Unorthodox combinations of stone were introduced, with many designs starting to combine natural minerals such as Onyx.
