A rather impressive French bangle from the late Art Deco period. The piece has been entirely handmade with 18 karat yellow gold and silver, set with Ceylonese sapphires, diamonds and a natural cultured pearl. The bangle is formed as a wide flat tapered hollow hinged band which terminates with a tongue and box clasp and safety chain. The diamonds featured in the bangle are semi modern brilliant cut stones of G/H colour and SI/P1 clarity. The Ceylonese sapphires are brilliant cut and total an estimated 5.10 carat. In the centre of the bangle sits a natural cultured semi baroque pearl which is surrounded by eight of the bright Ceylonese sapphires. The clasp has been stamped with 3 French hallmarks, one of which is a purity mark, and another to signify manufacture in Paris. The eagle head mark indicates a purity of at least 750 of 1000 parts gold (18 karat), while the small boar head indicates it was assayed (tested) in Paris, and likely manufactured there also. Unfortunately the third mark which would be the makers mark is illegible, despite lengthy investigation. We date this particular piece to the late 1930s for several reasons. The diamonds are faceted as 'semi modern brilliant' cuts, popular in the 1930s, the top of the bracelet is crafted in silver as opposed to white gold which was gaining popularity thereafter, and lastly the design is reminiscent of late Art Deco and early Retro jewellery design. A magnificent bracelet, and one of the finest to grace our jewel cabinets in a long time.
