Very fine Pavel Ovchinnikov antique Russian seven color enamel and vermeil silver tea strainer. Unusual, highly original design incorporating a stylized Yin Yang motif around the perimeter of the strainer in alternating indigo, green and white lozenges with white and orange dots. Perhaps referencing the Russian admiration for Chinese tea and the balance it brings to one's lifestyle. The strainer perforations arranged in a symmetrical floral pattern reminiscent of a chrysanthemum. A lotus shaped enamel flower in green and persimmon red enamel with a white dot at the top of the handle on both the front and the back. The handle marked P. Ovchinnikov in Cyrillic with the double headed eagle Imperial Warrant, A. A. 1890- assay master for Andrei Alecsandroff, 1859-1917, Saint George on horseback within octagonal lozenge for Moscow. The end of the handle beautifull shaped referencing a kovsh shape, densely decorated with stylized floral motifs including a large white lotus with a pink base. Excellent antique condition with very minor abraisions. Pavel Ovchinnikov is considered one of the most important Russian silver and gold smiths of his time. He was born a bondsman to Prince Volkonsky and sent to Moscow as an apprentice as a teenager when it became evident that he was artistically gifted. Ovchinnikov established his own workshop in 1851 which developed into a highly successful enterprise with a turnover of 1.5 million rubles by 1854. In 1865, the Ovchinnikov factory received the Imperial Warrant, the highest honor in the field granted to the likes of Karl Faberge and Feodor Ruckert. Many successful exhibitions, both domestic and international, cemented the company's reputation. Works by Ovchinnikov are represented in major museum collections worldwide.
